Superimposed Modalities

In interior design there are two modalities: that of the physical built environment and modality of design visualizations and renderings. Although the images of the latter may seek to become ever more “realistic,” they will always operate in the sphere of representation, separate from physical reality.

The goal of my project, Superimposed Modalities is to question the boundaries between these two through the superimposition of simulated (computer-generated) interiors onto an illusory physical model. When superimposed upon each other through the act of light projection and mapping, the illusion created (of an interior space with depth) calls into question the boundaries between the two spheres. They may never be unified, but where does the boundary between physicality (real) and representation (fake) lie?
