Overlap

Overlap: This transitional shelter challenges the typical institutional environment in shelters to provide amenities for reasonable living and addresses privacy and autonomy for individuals and families experiencing insecure housing. In response to this, I utilized an overlapping spatial strategy to develop spaces that allowed both moments of privacy and moments of connection with others. Creating a series of overlapping geometries within the existing shell of the building developed a lot of small, dense spaces that are rich with opportunity for unconventional geometries and playful layouts. The labyrinthine quality that emerged from this spatial strategy is exhibited in the enfilade of rooms that make up each private unit and shared kitchens.
